Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are a combination of Expanded Polystyrene foam (EPS) laminated between two sheets of 7/16” Oriented Strand Board (OSB). SIPs share the same structural properties as an I-beam. The rigid insulation core of the SIP performs as a web, while the OSB sheeting exhibits the same properties as the flanges. SIPs as a combined component takes place of the studs, insulation, vapor barrier & air barrier.
Please visit 2007 Supplement to the IRC, Section R614 for additional information on how you can implement SIPs into your construction project.
